Comprised of three distinctly separate areas, Top Town, Lake
Gregory, Valley
of the Moon, and several nearby communities, Crestline started forming in the
early 1900s around the lumber mills in the area. One of the earliest
mills, operated by the Seeley brothers, was later bought by the city of Los
Angeles and is still operated today as Camp Seeley, with its lodge and cabins
making a rustic mountain get-away destination.
Housing developments started early in this area first accessible by improved roads and low enough to suffer less snow. The Skyland sub-division offered space for homes to be built where people could visit the mountains and enjoy clubs and resorts, many now disappeared or run by Parks & Recreation like Joe's Place in Cedarpines Park, and the original Arrowhead Valley Club, later rebuilt and now known as San Moritz Lodge.
